The Little Church in Dolene
The small village of Dolene, in the Petrich region of Bulgaria, is closely connected with local benefactor Stefan Lipiyski, who since 2018 has been restoring its old houses with his own funds and transforming Dolene into a living ethnographic village filled with flowers.
The village is home to the Church of the Holy Mother of God, built in the 19th century. Its walls are covered with flowers.
Not real flowers, but colourful floral motifs forming part of the church’s artistic decoration.
It is easy to see these flowers simply as decoration. But they tell another story.
A real flower blooms and fades. A painted flower can remain for generations.
More than a century ago, someone chose to place flowers on these walls — and today, they are still blooming.
Perhaps this is one of the oldest things we seek – to help beauty last and to honor the memory of our ancestors.
In Dolene, they do.
